Transport
Roads and Driving:

Due to the vast size of Australia and the large driving distances, you must bear in mind that travel between places may take a lot longer than you expect. It may not look far on a map, but be assured that it is. Without plenty of flights, or an extremely intense coach tour, you can’t explore the whole of Australia in 2 weeks. However, considering its size Australia offers a very good transport network covering most places.

Probably the best way to get out there and explore is to hire or buy your own vehicle. By doing this you can get to all of those places you may not be able to reach on public transport, and you can set your own timetable to your specific needs. However, this option can work out expensive unless travelling with a group.

Road Rules:

Australians drive on the left side of the road and the country has a relatively good road safety record. It must be noted that many laws including the traffic laws, differ between the states of Australia and those intending to drive in different states should first familiarise themselves with the local traffic laws.

Driver’s Licence:

The requirements for obtaining a driver’s licence in Australia differ between the states. A valid driver’s licence from any state in valid around the country. Visitors and temporary residents must convert the licence to a local one within 12 months of arrival, whilst a permanent resident must do so within 3 months.

Fuels

Fuel retailers are allowed one price change a day. Prior to changing the price, they have to submit the price for the following day, for publication on a government register. Previously local fuel prices fluctuated hugely and sometimes whilst the motorist was pulling in at the station. Most outlets sell diesel, gas and two octanes of unleaded petrol. High local diesel prices have made it unpopular as an alternative to petrol.

Buses

The main bus company in Australia is Greyhound Australia. They offer service around the whole of Australia, following most of the major routes. There are also smaller services which operate around the cities and in specific areas, offering more comprehensive service within a shorter distance. There are also other state specific services including Firefly, Premier Stateliner in SA, V/Line in VIC and Westrail in WA.

Trains

Australia is a huge country. And a great way to appreciate its vastness is to cross it at ground level by train. The famous Indian Pacific links Sydney, Adelaide & Perth in 3 days, crossing the great Nullarbor Plain in the process.
